The value of a Golf Pre Shot Routine

Routine is good. When we go the mall we park in the same place. We put our car keys in the same spot when we arrive home (usually).

Our kids call us old and boring because we always do certain things the same way but there is a purpose. We know where we are parked at the mall and do not have to worry about finding our car. A consistent golf pre shot routine has much the same purpose. It does not matter if the putt is for the Masters, the club championship or simply to break 100 we can put added pressure upon ourselves.

If we fall back into our pre shot routine we can concentrate on the routine and not focus on the importance of the putt.  Of course you need to develop your own routine that you are comfortable with and then consistently use it for every putt.

Below is a short video that discusses the importance of the putting routine. The instructor’s routine is very brief and that work’s for him. My routine takes a little longer but not so long as to become a distraction to my partners.

Golf Swing Connection Revisited

At Tales From The Bunker we have talked several times about connection or maintaining the relationship between the arms and the body during the swing.

This came to mind while watching the video from Monday’s blog about golf basics. Since the connection to the golf club starts with the golf grip (your hands), extends thorough your arms and finally ends with your body, this relationship is critical to a consistent and powerful golf swing.

The power in a golf swing comes from the use of the body’s major muscle groups. Most amateurs in an effort to maximize the golf swing’s power try to make as big a shoulder turn a possible.  But if you take the club back with the shoulder joints only, your deprive yourself of the strength of the larger muscles in the shoulder.

If you watch the instructor swing at the beginning of the video you will notice immediately that when his body stops during the backswing so do his arms, thus maintaining connection. Since he has a relatively short backswing and slow tempo it is easy to see.  Some of the tour pros are as limber as cooked spaghetti and swing so fast that it is hard to see the connection.

Next time you go to the range use the video as a model of how to maintain the relationship between your arms and your body. You will be happy with the results.

Back to the Basics of the Golf Swing

After a summer of golf in which there have been good days and other days on the golf course, sometimes it is a good idea to have a refresher on the basics.  Golf can be made extremely complicated and most of us get caught up in angles, weight shifts, stance etc.

But golf at our level of performance does not need to be overly complicated.  A return to the basics can clear your head and help your game. Below is a video that in three minutes explains the basics that we all need at every level of the game. Take a look.  I bet it will help you game.

Remember keep ‘em in the fairway.

As a favor to Becky I would like to mention that she has opened a new division in our eBay Store. We made a tongue in cheek video recently about the new line. Please take a look and hopefully have a chuckle or two.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Let’s take a few minutes and talk about a very serious subject. I am sure every reader has been touched by breast cancer in some way. Both Becky and I have been. Now is the time to help science conquer this dreaded disease.

I am sure you have noticed pink is everywhere from the National Football League to the Susan G. Komen activities in virtually every town.   EBay is particularly active in this cause through eBay Giving Works. You can shop “pink” listings including one-of-a-kind items and experiences from celebrities like Cher, Reese Witherspoon, and Howard Stern. Enter to win one of five $100 Holiday Shopping Sprees awarded every day in October. You can even donate a portion of your selling price. Go to eBay Giving Works and make a difference.

But the activity closest to my heart is the “bling my bra” promotion.  If you query for bling my bra you will find special bras donated by eBay members. The sale precedes goes 100% to breast cancer. I suspect no one would be caught dead wearing one of these but that obviously is not the point. Open up your wallet and your heart and buy one of these tricked out bras. It just might help someone you love.

Till next time keep ‘em in the fairway.
